Day Hike Series: Hemlock Falls
Day Hike Series: Hemlock Falls
In this installment of our Day Hike Series, we’ll head to Hemlock Falls in South Mountain Reservation, just outside Millburn, NJ. Our journey begins at Penn Station, where we’ll take NJ Transit for a quick 45-minute ride before a short walk from the station delivers us straight to the trailhead — an ideal example of the city-to-trail life that’s possible in the Northeast.
The Hemlock Falls loop covers about 6 miles with 650 ft of elevation gain. Expect a mix of wide forested paths, some narrower rocky sections, and the reward of a small waterfall along the way. We’ll move at a mellow but steady pace, catching glimpses of seasonal change and making space for fresh air, connection, and community.
Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just starting out, this route offers a perfect mid-distance escape with the restorative views and rhythm of nature only a train ride away.
