Ocean Research Camp Trip
Explore the Edges of Land and Sea
Join us for a three-day coastal camping experience dedicated to exploring the intertidal world of California’s Central Coast. Together, we’ll hike along seaside cliffs, wade through tide pools, and observe the vibrant ecosystems that thrive where ocean meets land. Between field sessions, we’ll share meals, swim, and gather around the fire to reflect on what we’ve discovered. This weekend combines exploration, learning, and connection as an opportunity to slow down, observe the natural world up close, and share meaningful moments with others under open skies and ocean air.

about
This coastal immersion camping experience is timed to coincide with optimal low tides. This trip provides a unique opportunity to explore and document intertidal life at Hazard’s Reef over the weekend of February 27–March 1. Participants will engage in hands-on exploration of rocky shorelines and tide pools during both daylight and evening low tides, observing a wide range of marine organisms and the dynamic interaction between land and sea that defines this ecosystem. The workshops offered blend field identification, ecological observation, and community camp life, guided by marine biologist Parker Kalan.
Your guide for the weekend is the amazing Parker Kalan. Parker works full-time as a Marine Biologist monitoring the effects of coastal power plants, and specifically the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power plant on the environment. He has an MS in Ecology and believes that exploring and integrating people from all walks of life into the ocean environment is a critical component of conservation. This includes unique partnerships that expand the availability and accessibility of Science to a progressive and forward-thinking audience.

Itinerary
Settle in at our group campsite and help set up tents, the shared kitchen, and community area. We’ll start with introductions and a relaxed afternoon to get to know one another before shuttling to our first tide pool site at Hazard’s Reef.
Expect to explore vibrant intertidal zones during low tide and learn key concepts about marine ecology. We’ll end the evening cooking dinner together in our shared camp kitchen and gathering around the fire for casual conversation and reflection.
