Natural Soft Pastel Workshop

Step into the sunlit private art studio of artist Júlia Godoy for a hands-on Natural Soft Pastel Making Workshop. In this meditative class, you'll learn how to transform foraged natural pigments into soft pastels, sculpting earth into color with your own hands.
Using pigments collected from landscapes across Los Angeles including red, yellow, and brown earth pigments collected from the Los Angeles Mountains. You'll create a custom set of five tinted pastels in a limited, intentional palette. You'll choose two base pigments, then learn how to mix, bind, and roll them into beautiful soft tints ready for drawing.
At the end of class, we'll do a few light test swipes so you can see your colors in action. Since the pastels need a few days to fully cure, I'll share tips on handling them gently and keeping them safe while they cure.

About

Júlia Godoy is a Brazilian artist in Los Angeles, California, who works with handmade pigment and paint made from foraged natural materials. She collects bones, ash, plants, soil, and insects from her direct surroundings to process them into pigment by hand using a mortar and pestle. Her pigments serve as a link to connect physical land to intangible memory, and her work is centered around her experiences as a Brazilian immigrant. In addition, Júlia's artwork surveys her dreams, forms of communication, and human interrelatedness. She believes the physical materials she works with hold a memory of their own, and she has become fascinated with how fragments of their recollections echo throughout her paintings.
